A lawful permanent resident from Australia has been taken into custody and faces federal charges after allegedly casting ballots in federal elections in Louisiana, according to official reports.
Denise Nataly Migliore, 51, was named in a four-count indictment last month. The charges include making false statements to register to vote and illegal voting in an election, as announced by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Louisiana.
Allegations of Unlawful Voting
Prosecutors contend that in October 2022 and again in October 2024, Migliore knowingly made incorrect declarations regarding her U.S. citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Subsequently, in November of both those years, she allegedly cast ballots after falsely certifying her eligibility as a U.S. citizen.
As a non-citizen, Migliore was legally ineligible to participate in U.S. federal elections.
Her arrest occurred on July 1 at the federal courthouse in New Orleans. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) conducted the arrest following an investigation initiated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Strict Enforcement and Penalties
Lauren Bis, acting Assistant DHS Secretary of Public Affairs, issued a statement regarding the case, highlighting the serious implications of such actions.
"This individual from Australia now faces federal charges for falsely asserting U.S. citizenship and unlawfully casting votes in two elections," Bis stated. "Her arrest and the subsequent charges are a direct result of the diligent efforts by ICE law enforcement and our federal partners. Our message to non-citizens who participate in American elections is unequivocal: We will identify you, apprehend you, and you will face significant repercussions, including criminal prosecution and deportation. Only American citizens should have the right to elect American leaders."
If found guilty, Migliore could face a maximum sentence of five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release. Additionally, she faces potential financial penalties including a fine of up to $250,000 and a mandatory special assessment fee of $100.
