Conservative political figure Keiko Fujimori, daughter of a former president, has been officially confirmed as the victor in Peru's recent presidential runoff election. At 51 years old, Ms. Fujimori is slated to assume office later this month, becoming the country's ninth president within a span of ten years. This election marked her fourth attempt to secure the nation's highest office, a pursuit set against a backdrop of prolonged political turbulence in Peru.
"I receive with profound gratitude the trust that millions of Peruvians have placed in me. A new stage begins. We assume it with responsibility, humility, and a deep sense of duty," she wrote. "Each day of this transition process is an opportunity to listen, engage in dialogue, and arrive prepared at the start of the new government. Through these accounts, we will share the progress of this stage and the work we have been carrying out. I invite you to join us."
Peru's primary electoral authority formally certified the results on Friday. Fujimori secured 9,223,000 votes, accounting for 50.14% of the total ballots cast. Her challenger, nationalist Congressman Roberto Sánchez, garnered over 9,173,000 votes, representing 49.87%. The margin between the two candidates was exceptionally narrow.
Her path to the runoff election involved emerging victorious from a crowded field of 33 other candidates during the initial round of voting in April.
Addressing National Concerns
The election took place amidst significant public apprehension regarding a rise in crime, particularly extortion activities carried out by violent organized criminal networks. During her campaign, Fujimori pledged to adopt a stern approach to law enforcement, vowing to address crime with an "iron fist."
A Divisive Family Legacy
Keiko Fujimori is the daughter of the late Alberto Fujimori, who served as president in the 1990s. His administration is credited with successfully quashing the Shining Path extremist rebel group, but it also became known for its authoritarian tendencies. In 2009, the elder Fujimori was convicted on charges of human rights abuses related to the campaign against the rebels, and subsequently faced convictions for corruption. His tenure and actions continue to be a source of deep division within Peru.
The United States State Department extended its congratulations to the younger Fujimori on Tuesday. A statement from the Trump administration indicated an eagerness to enhance cooperation with the incoming Fujimori government, aiming to deepen collaboration on security matters and strengthen bilateral ties in investment and trade across the region.
