As analysis continues regarding the U.S. men's national team's departure from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, former U.S. women's national team player Megan Rapinoe has shared her interpretation of the events.
Speaking on her podcast, "A Touch More: The Beautiful Game," Rapinoe pointed to interventions by former President Trump as a source of distraction that she believes contributed to the team's struggles.
Rapinoe's Analysis of USMNT World Cup Exit
A significant storyline leading up to the U.S. men's national team's match against Belgium involved the red card and subsequent suspension of star player Folarin Balogun. The decision was widely considered harsh. Following this, former President Trump contacted FIFA, leading to Balogun being allowed to play, reportedly under the same rule that had previously permitted Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo to play in similar circumstances.
Rapinoe argued that the involvement of the former president in this situation created a considerable distraction for the team. She elaborated on the impact of this external factor:
I think the distraction got to the team for sure in some type of way. Whether it was, you know, this red card situation, whether it was being in a public discourse with this president, all of the, you know, shenanigans and chaos that comes with the feelings on both sides of that. Whether you agree with it or not it's, it's just like it's a lot to contend with.
Team Dynamics and Player Engagement
Beyond the specific incident, Rapinoe also reflected on what she perceives as a broader characteristic of the U.S. men's team. She suggested that the squad lacks a core group of older players who are accustomed to navigating and managing off-field distractions or public discourse.
Furthermore, Rapinoe observed a general trend within men's football where players are less inclined to use their public platforms to engage in political or social commentary, or to shoulder broader responsibilities beyond the game itself. She stated:
So, not only does this team not have like a core of older players who are used to that, but none of these players talk about anything ever, like for the most part. I think in men's football, just like in general, there's not a lot of players who are choosing to use their platform or to, you know, broaden their scope of pressure and responsibility.
Rapinoe's comments offer a distinct perspective on the factors that may influence team performance, extending beyond on-field tactics to include the psychological and public relations aspects of high-stakes international competition.
